Meet RSU 18’s Superintendent of Schools, Carl Gartley
Meet our Superintendent of Schools, Carl Gartley!
What was your greatest memory from last school year?
Last year we had two amazing principals retire after many years working in our district, Gwen Bacon and Paula Callan. Watching our staff, parents, and both present and former students talk about these two great educators and the impact they had on so many lives was inspiring. It was the perfect example of how impactful the relationships we build in our schools can be.
What are you most looking forward to about this upcoming school year?
One of the best parts of working in education is that every year starts with a clean slate and fresh adventures. I love looking forward to the new year wondering what it will bring. Only time will tell, but I hope everyone has a great year.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself!
One of my first jobs was lobstering out of Rockport Harbor. I had 300 traps and hauled them with my family. The work ethic I learned at a young age has served me well my entire life.
Tell us about your family!
My wife Amy and I have lived in China for three decades; it has been a great place to raise a family. My son Jared and his wife Brittney live in Vassalboro, and my daughter Alyssa and her husband Jeff live in Jefferson. I am right in the middle of them, and could not be happier. Spending time with my wife, kids, and grandkids is the joy of my life.
What is one of the proudest moments you’ve had so far in your life?
I did not realize it at the time it happened, but as time goes on I realize how proud I am of being the Superintendent of our district. Every day I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to do my part in helping every one of our students find success. I rely on some amazing teachers and support staff to make this happen, but with the culture that we have created together I know we can continue to make RSU 18 the amazing school district that it is.
