Meet Superintendent of Schools, Carl Gartley
Meet RSU 18’s Superintendent of Schools, Carl Gartley!
What are you most looking forward to about this upcoming school year?
I really love having the opportunities to visit classrooms all over the district. Watching students and teachers interact, seeing students light up when they learn something new, it really is special.
What’s your favorite thing to do over the summer?
This is an easy one. I have three amazing grandkids now (4 months, 1 year old, and a 3 year old). My wife, Amy, and I love spending time with them. They bring so much joy to our lives, and they keep us laughing all the time. Plus they go home to their parents when we get tired!
What is your favorite thing about being part of RSU 18?
30+ years ago I started my career as a student teacher at Messalonskee High School. Now, I have the pleasure of being the Superintendent of this amazing district. The genuine commitment and dedication our staff has is inspiring. They will do anything for students. I feel so lucky to be part of this special district.
If you weren’t involved in the profession of education, what would we find you doing?
Not sure exactly what I would be doing, but this summer I took my grandkids to the zoo. We had a blast. I am guessing if I was not working with kids, I would be working with animals in some manner.
What was your greatest memory from last school year?
I don’t know if it was because the pandemic was behind for the entire year or things were very much back to normal, but last year’s high school graduation was special for me. As I was sitting on the stage listening to graduates speak and watching how proud their families were, it was somehow very uplifting for me. Yes, I would have to say graduation last year really had an impact on me.
