Take a Hike’s Latest Update
By: Krystal Blaisdell
We’ve had some great feedback, suggestions, and questions regarding the “Take a Hike” FALL 5 CHALLENGE! Here is some additional helpful information:
Have you done a hike that is not on the list? AWESOME! You can definitely add it into your total number of hikes! The trails on the form are just suggestions of hikes from the RSU 18 communities and around the state. Simply write the name of the trail/hike on your form. For example, a highly recommended hike that is not on the form is the China Primary School Community Forest Trail! Check it out!
Loved a hike and want to repeat it? Although it is highly encouraged to explore as many trails as possible, you may repeat up to 2 hikes, an additional time!
Here are some other tips from those who have been taking part:
There have been reports that the Snow Pond Trail is not well marked and some have had safety concerns; feel free to substitute the James H. Bean Nature Trail (behind the school, pictured)
The Round Top Trail in Belgrade has options for difficulty. . . The trail into the loop junction is about 1 mile. From there, if you prefer a more challenging/steep hike, go right (counter clockwise, 1.3 miles to spur). Going left at the trail junction sign (clockwise, .8 miles to spur) is a less challenging path for reaching the spur for the summit. If you take the shorter, less steep route to the summit, you may want to return on the same path you came on rather than making the loop in which you would encounter rockier/steeper decline.
Don’t forget to share any photos of your hikes with Tori Imes (communications@rsu18.org) to go on our RSU 18 Facebook and Instagram pages.
Enjoy this beautiful week ahead! #WeAreRSU18
