RSU 18 Kicks Off the School Year with an Inspiring Opening Day

Regional School Unit 18 launched the new school year with an energetic and heartfelt Opening Day celebration for staff. The morning began with a warm welcome from Sunrise Bagel, which provided an abundance of fresh bagels, scones, and coffee for all to enjoy! As staff arrived, student athletes lined the entrance to the Performing Arts Center, cheering them on as they walked a red carpet into the morning session—setting a spirited tone for the year ahead.

The district’s new Superintendent, Andrew Carlton, opened the day with a message of gratitude and vision. He expressed appreciation for the entire RSU 18 team, highlighting the custodial staff for preparing the buildings so beautifully for the year, and thanking Assistant Superintendent Keith Morin for his steady guidance.

Carlton spoke of education as “more than a profession—it’s a calling,” reminding staff that teachers are the heart and soul of the district. He emphasized honoring the strong legacy already established in RSU 18—a legacy of high standards, innovation, and resilience—while looking forward to building upon that foundation together.

In his speech, Mr. Carlton highlighted the district’s commitment to academic excellence, equity, and teacher support. He shared his vision of schools where every student feels safe, respected, and valued; where differences are celebrated; and where every child has the tools and opportunities they need to succeed. “Our educators challenge students, fuel curiosity, and create a culture where every student knows success is possible, no matter what challenges they face,” he said.

He also underscored his commitment to supporting teachers through professional development, collaboration, and mentorship, making sure every educator feels important and valued. “We are not Belgrade, China, Sidney, or Oakland—we are RSU 18,” Carlton declared. “Better together than apart.”

The celebration also included the introduction of new staff members and a moving recognition of staff who have dedicated 30 or more years to RSU 18. Each name was met with enthusiastic applause, a testament to the district’s pride in its people and its enduring commitment to those who serve students year after year.

Superintendent Carlton closed by reminding staff to hold on to the spark and passion that first brought them to education. “We impact lives and shape the future,” he said, encouraging partnership, feedback, and shared vision as essential to the district’s continued success.

With excitement, gratitude, and a renewed sense of purpose, RSU 18 is ready to begin the 2025–2026 school year—together! #WeAreRSU18
